Product Details

The BQ76942PFBR is a highly integrated battery monitor and protector designed for 3-series to 10-series Li-Ion, Li-Polymer and LiFePO4 battery packs. It combines accurate cell monitoring, configurable battery protection, current measurement, temperature monitoring and cell balancing functions in a single 48-pin device.

The device provides monitoring capability for individual cells in battery packs ranging from 3-series to 10-series configurations. Its measurement system supports accurate cell-voltage monitoring together with current and temperature measurements, allowing the battery management system to evaluate operating conditions and respond to abnormal battery states.

The BQ76942PFBR integrates two independent ADCs and supports simultaneous current and voltage sampling. It also includes a high-accuracy coulomb counter with a typical input offset error below 1µV and cell-voltage measurement accuracy below 10mV under the specified conditions. These capabilities make the device suitable for battery systems requiring detailed state and protection monitoring.

Battery protection is a major function of the BQ76942PFBR. The device includes a high-side charge-pump driver for NFET-based protection and supports protection functions covering cell voltage, temperature, current and internal diagnostics. An integrated secondary chemical fuse drive provides an additional protection mechanism for battery-pack designs.

Cell balancing can be controlled autonomously by the device or managed by a host processor. This allows the BQ76942PFBR to support battery packs where maintaining cell voltage consistency is important for usable capacity and overall battery-pack management.

Temperature monitoring is supported through an internal temperature sensor and up to nine external thermistors. The device also supports random cell-attachment sequences during production, which can simplify manufacturing processes for multicell battery packs.

For system communication, the BQ76942PFBR supports 400kHz I2C, SPI and HDQ one-wire interfaces. Dual programmable LDOs are also integrated for external system use, allowing the device to provide additional regulated supplies within the battery-management architecture.

The device provides several operating modes to reduce power consumption when full monitoring activity is not required. These include normal, sleep, deep-sleep and shutdown modes, making the BQ76942PFBR suitable for battery-powered equipment where standby power consumption is an important design consideration.

The BQ76942PFBR is supplied in a 48-pin TQFP package and operates across a -40°C to +85°C temperature range. TI lists the BQ76942PFBR as an active production device.

Typical applications include cordless power tools, garden tools, vacuum cleaners, e-bikes, e-scooters, light electric vehicles, industrial battery packs and non-military drones. The combination of monitoring, protection, balancing and communication functions makes the device suitable for centralized battery-management architectures covering a wide range of rechargeable battery systems.
