Product Details

The 220V to 15V AC power transformer is a step-down transformer designed to convert mains AC voltage into a lower 15V AC output for electronic and electrical equipment. It provides a conventional transformer-based power solution for applications that require low-voltage alternating current rather than a directly regulated DC supply.

The primary side is designed for a 220V AC input, while the secondary side provides a 15V AC output. Because the secondary output remains AC, the transformer can be connected directly to equipment designed for 15V AC or used as the input stage of a DC power supply incorporating rectification, filtering and voltage regulation.

This type of transformer is different from an AC DC switching adapter. A transformer performs voltage conversion through electromagnetic induction and does not itself perform the rectification and electronic regulation associated with a switching power supply. This makes it useful for applications where a traditional transformer-based architecture is preferred.

The 15V AC secondary can be used in control circuits, electronic equipment, instrumentation and low-voltage electrical systems. It can also provide the AC source for bridge-rectifier circuits used to generate DC power for downstream electronics.

For audio equipment, a 220V to 15V transformer can serve as part of the power supply section of an amplifier, preamplifier or other analog audio product. Transformer-based supplies can be particularly useful in designs where the engineer wants to separate the mains input from the low-voltage circuit through magnetic isolation.

The transformer can also be incorporated into industrial control equipment and customized electronic systems. Relays, control boards, indicators and other low-voltage circuits may use a suitable transformer as their isolated AC power source, provided that the secondary voltage and current rating are matched to the load.

When selecting a 220V to 15V transformer, the output voltage alone is not sufficient to determine suitability. The required secondary current, VA rating, operating frequency, insulation level, temperature rise and physical dimensions should all be checked against the equipment design. A transformer must have sufficient power capacity for the intended continuous load.

If the 15V AC output will be rectified into DC, the designer should also account for the characteristics of the rectifier and filter circuit. The resulting DC voltage will not simply equal 15V, and the load, transformer regulation and capacitor characteristics can affect the final voltage available to the electronic circuit.

The transformer format should also be selected according to the available installation space. EI-core, encapsulated and other transformer constructions can provide different mechanical and thermal characteristics, so the final product enclosure and mounting method should be considered during system design.

For safety-critical applications, the input and output insulation requirements, creepage and clearance, grounding arrangement and enclosure protection should be verified before production use. The 220V primary side must be treated as a hazardous-voltage circuit during installation and servicing.

The 220V to 15V AC power transformer is therefore a practical passive power-conversion component for electronic equipment requiring an isolated low-voltage AC source. Its simple electromagnetic operating principle makes it suitable for power supply circuits, control systems, audio equipment, instrumentation and customized low-voltage electrical applications.
