Product Details

The HC-12 is a 433MHz wireless UART transceiver module designed to replace short-distance wired serial connections with a long-range wireless data link. Built around the SI4438 RF transceiver and an onboard microcontroller, it handles the wireless communication process internally while allowing an external controller to communicate with the module through a simple UART interface.

Rather than requiring developers to design an RF communication circuit from the ground up, the HC-12 provides a ready-to-integrate serial communication interface. Data received through the UART interface can be transmitted wirelessly to another compatible module, while received wireless data is delivered through the serial interface. This transparent transmission approach makes the module particularly useful when an existing microcontroller or embedded system already communicates through a serial port.

The wireless operating range covers 433.4 to 473.0MHz, with up to 100 selectable communication channels using 400kHz channel spacing. The module can provide up to 100mW (20dBm) transmit power, while the transmission parameters can be configured for different communication requirements. In suitable open-space conditions, communication distances of around 1km can be achieved, although actual range depends on antenna configuration, obstacles, interference, installation height, data rate and the surrounding environment.

One of the useful characteristics of the HC-12 is its configurable operating modes. FU1, FU2, FU3 and FU4 modes provide different balances between power consumption, transmission speed, response time and communication distance. For battery-powered sensor equipment, a lower-power operating mode can be useful, while systems that prioritize communication range can use a mode designed for longer-distance transmission.

Module configuration is performed through AT commands using the SET control interface. Parameters such as serial baud rate, wireless channel, transmission power and communication mode can be changed without developing a separate RF control interface. This makes the HC-12 suitable for prototypes as well as embedded products where wireless parameters may need to be adjusted during development or deployment.

The module operates from approximately 3.2V to 5.5V and provides UART TTL communication through RXD and TXD pins. It also supports an antenna connection for 433MHz operation, with module versions and documentation describing spring-antenna and external-antenna connection options. The compact board measures approximately 27.8 × 14.4mm, allowing it to be integrated into space-constrained electronic equipment.

For wireless sensor applications, the HC-12 can transmit measurements such as temperature, humidity, voltage, status information or other serial data from a remote node to a receiving controller. In industrial monitoring, it can provide a simple wireless link between equipment and a central data collection system. It can also be used in robot control, telemetry, smart metering, security equipment and remote electronic systems where a conventional Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection is not the preferred communication method.

The transparent UART architecture is especially useful when upgrading an existing wired serial system. Instead of redesigning the host software around a completely different wireless protocol, developers can retain much of the existing serial communication structure and introduce the HC-12 as the wireless communication layer. Pairing two compatible modules creates a point-to-point serial link, while additional system-level addressing and communication logic can be implemented by the host controller when a larger network is required.

For product development, the antenna, supply capability, serial voltage levels, communication mode and required transmission distance should be considered together. The stated wireless range is dependent on operating conditions rather than a guaranteed indoor distance, so antenna placement and the surrounding RF environment are important when designing the final system.
