XC7Z020-1CLG484I Connects Embedded Software With Custom Hardware

The XC7Z020-1CLG484I is an AMD Xilinx Zynq-7000 SoC designed for embedded systems that need more than a conventional processor can provide. Its dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processing system works alongside an Artix-7-class programmable logic fabric, allowing software and dedicated hardware functions to coexist inside one device.

This architecture is particularly useful when a product needs an operating system or application processor while also requiring deterministic control, parallel data processing or custom interfaces.

Software Can Handle the System While Logic Handles the Data

One of the main advantages of the Zynq-7000 architecture is that designers do not have to choose between a processor and an FPGA.

The dual ARM Cortex-A9 cores can handle application software, system management, networking and user-level processing. At the same time, the programmable logic can be configured for tasks that benefit from parallel execution.

For example, a machine vision system could use the ARM processor for system control and image management while the FPGA fabric performs image preprocessing. An industrial controller could run configuration software on the processor while implementing time-critical control functions in hardware.

This division can reduce processor workload while providing more predictable response times.

85K Logic Cells Leave Room for Custom Functions

The XC7Z020-1CLG484I provides approximately 85,000 logic cells within its programmable logic section. The device also includes 220 DSP slices and about 4.9 Mb of block RAM.

These resources can be used to build custom processing pipelines, digital filters, motor-control algorithms, image-processing functions and communication interfaces.

Because the hardware is programmable, the same basic device can support substantially different product architectures. Developers can change the FPGA design as requirements evolve without replacing the SoC itself.

The ARM Processing System Is More Than a CPU Core

The processor side of the XC7Z020 includes two Cortex-A9 cores with a maximum frequency of 667 MHz for the -1 speed grade.

The processing system also provides 256 KB of on-chip RAM and integrated interfaces including Ethernet, USB OTG, CAN, SPI, I2C, UART and SD/MMC connectivity. DMA support helps transfer data between memory and peripherals efficiently.

External DDR2, DDR3, DDR3L or LPDDR2 memory can also be connected through the integrated memory controller.

This combination makes the device suitable for embedded Linux systems as well as bare-metal and real-time software designs.

A Flexible Platform for Custom Interfaces

FPGA-based interface development becomes especially useful when a product needs to communicate with hardware that does not fit neatly into standard processor peripherals.

The programmable logic can implement custom timing, parallel data paths, protocol conversion and specialized interfaces. The ARM subsystem can then provide the higher-level software layer.

This approach can be valuable in industrial equipment, test instruments, robotics, imaging systems and communication products where interface requirements may change from one product generation to another.

CLG484 Supports a High-Density System Design

The XC7Z020-1CLG484I is supplied in a 484-CSPBGA package measuring approximately 19 × 19 mm with a 0.8 mm pitch.

The package provides up to 130 I/O according to current distributor specifications and offers enough connectivity for memory, sensors, communication peripherals and custom FPGA interfaces.

The compact package also makes the device practical for relatively dense embedded boards, although DDR routing, power integrity and FPGA I/O-bank planning need to be considered carefully during PCB development.

Industrial Grade for Demanding Embedded Equipment

The “I” suffix identifies the industrial temperature grade, with an operating junction temperature range of approximately -40°C to +100°C.

That makes XC7Z020-1CLG484I appropriate for industrial controllers and other equipment that may experience significant temperature changes during operation.

Its combination of industrial temperature capability, programmable logic and integrated ARM processing makes it relevant to factory automation, robotics, machine vision, instrumentation, networking and real-time control equipment.

When a Zynq-7000 SoC Makes More Sense Than Separate Devices

A conventional embedded design may use a processor together with a separate FPGA. That approach can provide plenty of flexibility, but it also increases component count, PCB routing and communication between devices.

The XC7Z020-1CLG484I brings the processor and FPGA into a single SoC architecture.

For products that require close coordination between software and programmable hardware, this can simplify the system architecture while providing a clear path for hardware acceleration.

The device is therefore particularly interesting for designs where processor performance alone is insufficient, but moving to a much larger FPGA-based platform would add unnecessary complexity.
