ISOW1044DFMR for Compact Isolated CAN FD Designs


ISOW1044DFMR from Texas Instruments combines galvanic CAN bus isolation with an integrated isolated DC-DC converter. By integrating the communication interface and isolated power function into one device, it can simplify isolated CAN designs where PCB space, noise control and power architecture are important.

The device supports Classical CAN communication at up to 1Mbps and CAN FD data rates of 2Mbps and 5Mbps. Its integrated power converter also provides isolated output power for external circuitry, reducing the need for a separate isolated DC-DC solution.

Integrated Isolation and Power Conversion

A major feature of ISOW1044DFMR is the combination of a CAN FD transceiver and isolated power converter in a single 20-pin package.

The integrated converter operates at a relatively low 25MHz switching frequency and is designed for low-emissions performance. With an appropriate two-layer PCB and ferrite filtering, the converter can meet CISPR 32 and EN 55032 Class B radiated-emissions requirements.

The isolated output can provide additional current for supporting circuits, with up to 20mA available for applications such as status indicators, monitoring circuits or other low-power functions.

CAN FD Communication up to 5Mbps

ISOW1044DFMR complies with the physical-layer requirements of ISO 11898-2:2016. It supports Classical CAN at 1Mbps while providing higher-speed CAN FD communication at 2Mbps and 5Mbps.

The transceiver also incorporates a typical 167ns loop delay, making it suitable for systems where communication timing is important. An integrated 10Mbps GPIO channel can be used for diagnostics, LED control or supply monitoring without necessarily adding another digital isolator.

Protection for Industrial CAN Networks

Industrial CAN nodes can encounter high transient voltages and significant ground-potential differences. ISOW1044DFMR provides ±58V DC bus fault protection and a ±12V receiver common-mode input range.

The device also offers high common-mode transient immunity, with a typical CMTI of 100kV/µs. Bus-side ESD protection includes ±12kV HBM protection and ±8kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact discharge protection.

Current limiting and thermal shutdown add further protection to the integrated power and transceiver functions.

Flexible Supply Architecture

The logic interface uses an independent VIO supply from 1.71V to 5.5V, allowing the device to work with a range of digital logic voltages. The power converter supply operates from 4.5V to 5.5V.

The isolated output has typical efficiency around 47% and an isolated output voltage accuracy of approximately ±5%. This architecture is particularly useful when the isolated CAN node needs a small amount of additional isolated power without adding another isolated converter.

20-Pin DFM SOIC Package

ISOW1044DFMR is supplied in a 20-pin wide SOIC DFM package. The device operates across a -40°C to +125°C temperature range, making it suitable for industrial equipment exposed to wide ambient temperature conditions.

The package and integrated power architecture help reduce the component count around an isolated CAN interface while maintaining the creepage and isolation requirements needed in many industrial communication designs.

Industrial Applications

ISOW1044DFMR can be used in factory automation, building automation, industrial transportation, motor drives, solar inverters and protection relays.

It is also well suited to isolated CAN gateways, industrial control nodes and other embedded systems where CAN FD performance must be combined with galvanic isolation and an integrated isolated power source.
