XC7Z020-1CLG484C Zynq-7000 SoC with 484-CSPBGA

The XC7Z020-1CLG484C is a Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoC that combines a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processing system with an Artix-7 programmable logic fabric. With 85K logic cells, 220 DSP slices and integrated embedded peripherals, it provides a flexible platform for designs that need software control and programmable hardware acceleration in the same device.

The 484-CSPBGA package gives the XC7Z020 access to more programmable-logic I/O than the smaller CLG400 package, making this variant particularly useful when a board design has a large number of external signals, memory connections or FPGA-based interfaces.

More I/O Flexibility in the CLG484 Package

One of the important characteristics of XC7Z020-1CLG484C is its CLG484 package. The package measures approximately 19 × 19 mm with a 0.8 mm ball pitch.

Compared with the CLG400 version of the same XC7Z020 device, the CLG484 package exposes more of the programmable-logic I/O resources. This can be valuable in systems where the FPGA portion needs to connect to multiple sensors, converters, memory devices, displays or custom digital interfaces.

The package decision should therefore be made early in a hardware project. Moving from CLG400 to CLG484 is not simply a matter of changing the number of balls, because PCB routing, power distribution and device pin assignments must all be designed around the selected package.

Dual ARM Cortex-A9 Processing System

The processing system inside the XC7Z020-1CLG484C contains two ARM Cortex-A9 cores and operates at up to 667 MHz for the -1 speed grade.

The ARM subsystem can run embedded software and manage tasks such as system configuration, communication, data management and application control. Linux-based systems as well as bare-metal or real-time software can be developed depending on the requirements of the product.

Having the processor and FPGA fabric on the same silicon also allows software and hardware functions to communicate through the integrated Zynq architecture instead of relying on a separate processor-to-FPGA connection.

85K Logic Cells and 220 DSP Slices

The programmable-logic side of the XC7Z020 provides approximately 85,000 logic cells. Its FPGA resources can be configured for custom control logic, data pipelines, signal processing and application-specific hardware acceleration.

The device also integrates 220 DSP slices and approximately 4.9 Mb of block RAM. These resources can be useful for applications involving filtering, mathematical calculations, image processing and high-throughput digital data.

For example, a vision system can use programmable logic for parallel image preprocessing while the ARM processors handle application-level processing and communications. This division of tasks can reduce processor workload and provide more predictable real-time performance.

Connectivity for Embedded Equipment

The XC7Z020 platform includes a broad range of interfaces for connecting the SoC to other components and subsystems.

Available interfaces include Gigabit Ethernet, USB, CAN, SD/SDIO, SPI, I2C and UART. The processing system also provides memory and storage interfaces suitable for DDR memory and external nonvolatile storage.

This combination allows a single XC7Z020 device to serve as the main processing and control element in many embedded boards rather than requiring separate processors, FPGA devices and communication controllers.

Commercial Temperature Grade

The “C” suffix in XC7Z020-1CLG484C identifies the commercial temperature grade. The specified junction temperature range is 0°C to +85°C.

This makes the device appropriate for controlled indoor equipment, embedded computing platforms, networking hardware, laboratory instruments and other products operating within a commercial temperature environment.

For equipment that must operate in substantially colder or hotter environments, an industrial-temperature XC7Z020 variant should be evaluated instead.

Applications That Benefit from CLG484

The additional I/O flexibility of the XC7Z020-1CLG484C can be useful in FPGA-based embedded systems where interface density is important.

Typical applications include industrial control equipment, machine vision, data acquisition, robotics, communications equipment, intelligent measurement systems and embedded computing platforms.

The programmable logic can be dedicated to application-specific processing while the ARM subsystem provides the software environment required for configuration, monitoring and networking.

XC7Z020-1CLG484C vs Smaller Package Options

For designs based on the XC7Z020 family, package selection is an important part of the initial architecture.

The CLG400 package offers a smaller 17 × 17 mm footprint and can be attractive when PCB area and I/O requirements are limited. The CLG484 package increases the available programmable-logic I/O while using a slightly larger 19 × 19 mm footprint.

If the design is expected to grow toward more external interfaces, the XC7Z020-1CLG484C can provide additional I/O headroom from the beginning. This can help avoid a later redesign caused by insufficient FPGA pin resources.

Selecting XC7Z020-1CLG484C for Production

When sourcing the XC7Z020-1CLG484C, the complete ordering code should be checked rather than selecting the XC7Z020 family name alone. The -1 speed grade, CLG484 package and commercial temperature designation are all part of the device specification.

Engineers should also verify package compatibility, I/O assignments, memory requirements, operating temperature, production availability and lifecycle status before finalizing a bill of materials.

For embedded designs that need the processing capabilities of an ARM-based SoC together with a relatively large programmable-logic fabric and expanded I/O availability, the XC7Z020-1CLG484C provides a well-established Zynq-7000 platform.
