TJA1051T/3/CM,118 5Mbps CAN with Silent Mode


The TJA1051T/3/CM,118 is an NXP high-speed CAN transceiver designed for automotive and embedded CAN networks requiring fast communication, flexible logic-level interfacing and robust bus protection. It supports CAN data rates up to 5Mbps and provides both Normal and Silent operating modes.

The /3 version includes a VIO interface that allows the transceiver to work with different microcontroller logic supply levels while maintaining a 5V CAN bus interface.

5Mbps CAN Communication

TJA1051T/3/CM,118 supports high-speed CAN communication according to ISO 11898-2 and can operate at data rates up to 5Mbps during the CAN FD fast phase.

The device provides one CAN transmitter and one receiver in an 8-pin SO package. Its high-speed signaling capability makes it suitable for automotive control networks and embedded systems where CAN communication speed is an important design requirement.

Normal and Silent Operating Modes

A key feature of this TJA1051 variant is its Silent Mode. In Normal Mode, the transceiver can transmit and receive CAN messages normally. Silent Mode disables the transmitter while keeping the receiver active, allowing the host controller to monitor CAN traffic without actively driving the bus.

This behavior can be useful during network diagnostics, system configuration and applications where a CAN node needs to observe communication without affecting other nodes.

Flexible MCU Logic Interface

The TJA1051T/3/CM,118 operates from a 4.5V to 5.5V supply and includes a VIO interface for logic-side voltage compatibility.

This allows the device to interface with 3.3V and other supported MCU logic levels without requiring a separate external level-shifting device. For embedded automotive controllers, this can simplify the connection between the microcontroller and the CAN transceiver.

Protection for Automotive CAN Networks

The transceiver incorporates protection features intended for automotive CAN environments. These include high ESD capability on the CAN bus pins, transient protection, TXD dominant timeout, undervoltage detection and thermal protection.

The device also disengages from the CAN bus when it is not powered, helping prevent an unpowered node from loading the network.

AEC-Q100 qualification and the -40°C to +150°C operating temperature range make the TJA1051 family suitable for demanding automotive electronics applications.

Compact SO8 Package

TJA1051T/3/CM,118 is supplied in an 8-pin SO package and uses tape-and-reel packaging. The compact footprint makes it suitable for automotive ECUs, CAN gateways and other embedded controllers where PCB space is limited.

Its combination of 5Mbps CAN communication, Silent Mode, flexible MCU logic interfacing and automotive protection functions provides a useful interface between CAN controllers and the physical bus.
