The LM358P is a dual operational amplifier designed for general-purpose analog circuit applications. It integrates two independent operational amplifiers in an 8-pin PDIP package, providing a practical solution for signal amplification, voltage conditioning and analog control.
The device is particularly useful in circuits where the input signal operates close to ground and where a simple dual-op-amp configuration can reduce component count.
The LM358P contains two operational amplifiers within a single package. Each amplifier can be configured independently for functions such as voltage amplification, buffering, filtering and signal conditioning.
One important characteristic of the LM358 architecture is its ability to operate with input common-mode voltage extending to ground. This makes it useful in single-supply circuits where the signal does not swing symmetrically around a positive and negative supply.
The LM358P operates from a supply range of 3V to 30V, giving designers flexibility when working with different analog power rails.
Using two amplifiers in one package can simplify analog circuit design when multiple signal paths are required.
For example, one amplifier can be used as a sensor signal buffer while the second amplifier performs voltage amplification or filtering. This can reduce PCB space compared with using two separate single operational amplifiers.
The two channels share the same power supply, but their signal paths can be configured independently according to the circuit requirements.
The LM358P is suitable for circuits where the input common-mode voltage approaches the negative supply rail.
This characteristic can be valuable in single-supply systems powered from sources such as 5V, 12V or other positive DC rails. A sensor output near 0V can be processed without necessarily requiring a negative supply rail.
However, the input common-mode range does not extend all the way to the positive supply rail. Designers should therefore verify the input voltage range against the supply voltage and intended signal levels.
Signal conditioning is one of the most common applications for the LM358P.
A sensor may generate a small analog voltage that needs to be amplified, filtered or buffered before it reaches an ADC. The LM358P can perform these functions using external resistors and capacitors.
A non-inverting amplifier configuration can increase a sensor signal to a level more suitable for an ADC, while a voltage follower can provide buffering between a high-impedance sensor and a lower-impedance circuit.
This makes the LM358P useful as an interface between analog sensors and digital control systems.
The LM358P can be configured as either an inverting or non-inverting amplifier.
In an inverting configuration, the voltage gain is determined by the ratio of the feedback resistor to the input resistor. In a non-inverting configuration, the gain is established by the feedback network around the amplifier.
This flexibility allows the same LM358P device to be adapted to different signal amplitudes without changing the basic IC.
When designing the gain stage, engineers should also consider bandwidth, input offset voltage, output swing and load conditions rather than calculating gain alone.
The LM358P is specified with a 700kHz bandwidth.
The available bandwidth in an actual circuit depends on the selected gain and feedback configuration. As gain increases, the usable signal bandwidth generally decreases because of the operational amplifier's gain-bandwidth characteristics.
For low-frequency sensor signals, measurement circuits and basic control systems, this bandwidth can provide sufficient performance. Higher-speed analog applications require a separate evaluation of slew rate, bandwidth and settling requirements.
The LM358P can be used in single-supply analog circuits without requiring a negative power rail for signals referenced near ground.
This can simplify power supply design in embedded equipment. However, the output does not behave as an ideal rail-to-rail output, so the expected output voltage range should be checked against the supply voltage and load.
If an application requires the output to operate very close to the positive supply rail, a rail-to-rail operational amplifier may be more appropriate.
The LM358P uses an 8-pin PDIP package. The through-hole package can be convenient for prototypes, laboratory equipment and PCB assemblies where traditional leaded components are preferred.
The specified operating temperature range for this part number is 0°C to 70°C.
When a design requires extended industrial temperature operation or surface-mount assembly, engineers should not assume that another LM358 variant has identical specifications. The exact Part Number and package should be checked before substitution.
The LM358P can be used in many low-frequency analog applications.
Typical applications include sensor signal conditioning, voltage amplification, active filters, analog control circuits, battery monitoring, threshold detection and signal buffering.
Its dual-channel configuration is especially useful when a system requires two analog functions but does not need the performance of a high-speed precision amplifier.
The LM358P should be selected according to the requirements of the complete analog signal chain.
Input offset voltage can affect the accuracy of low-level measurements. The amplifier's input common-mode range should be checked when signals approach either supply rail, while output voltage swing should be considered when driving an ADC or another analog stage.
Power-supply decoupling should also be placed appropriately close to the device. Feedback components should be selected according to the required gain and bandwidth rather than simply choosing resistor values based on the desired DC gain.
For sensor applications, the sensor output impedance and the amplifier's input characteristics should also be considered.
The LM358P is a practical choice when a design needs two general-purpose operational amplifiers in an 8-pin through-hole package.
Its ability to operate from a single positive supply, input common-mode operation near ground and dual-channel architecture make it suitable for many basic analog signal-conditioning circuits.
Before selecting the LM358P, engineers should verify supply voltage, input signal range, required bandwidth, output swing, load, temperature range and package requirements.
The LM358P provides two operational amplifier channels in a compact 8-pin PDIP package and can handle many common analog functions without requiring a complex supporting circuit.
For embedded systems, the device can serve as a simple interface between sensors and ADCs, while in control circuits it can provide amplification, buffering, filtering and threshold functions.
The most important consideration is to match the actual LM358P specifications with the signal characteristics and operating conditions of the target circuit rather than selecting the device solely because it belongs to the widely used LM358 family.
