FT230XQ-R USB to UART Converter IC for Embedded Systems

FT230XQ-R is a single-channel USB to UART converter IC designed for embedded products that need to connect a USB host with an asynchronous serial interface. It belongs to the FT-X family and combines USB interface functions, UART communication, configuration memory and clock generation into a compact device.

The key attraction of FT230XQ-R is its ability to add USB connectivity without making the main microcontroller responsible for USB protocol handling. A product that already communicates through UART can therefore gain a USB interface while keeping much of its existing embedded architecture intact.

For engineers searching for FT230XQ-R, this makes the device particularly relevant to USB serial adapters, development boards, embedded controllers, industrial equipment and compact electronic products.

FT230XQ-R Is More Than a Basic USB Serial Adapter

The most important characteristic of FT230XQ-R is its level of integration.

The chip handles the USB side internally and presents a conventional UART interface to the embedded system. This means the main MCU does not have to implement the USB communication function simply to provide a USB-to-serial connection.

Inside one device, FT230XQ-R combines the USB interface, UART engine, transmit and receive buffering, configuration memory and clock-generation circuitry.

That integration is what gives the part its practical value on a production PCB.

Single-Channel USB to UART Architecture

FT230XQ-R is built around a straightforward single-channel architecture.

The USB host communicates with the FT230XQ-R, while the embedded processor communicates with the chip through UART.

This separation is useful when an existing product already has a stable serial communication system.

Instead of redesigning the controller around USB, engineers can preserve the existing UART communication layer and add FT230XQ-R as the bridge between the controller and the USB connector.

For legacy designs, this can be a much cleaner upgrade path than changing the main processor.

Up to 3 Mbaud UART Communication

FT230XQ-R supports UART communication rates up to 3 Mbaud.

This gives the device enough flexibility for applications ranging from configuration and diagnostic interfaces to higher-speed serial data exchange.

The maximum UART baud rate does not mean that every application will achieve the same data throughput. Actual performance depends on USB transfers, UART configuration, host software and the amount of data being transmitted.

Nevertheless, the 3 Mbaud capability gives designers considerable room compared with basic low-speed serial interfaces.

Integrated 2048-Byte EEPROM

One of the more useful features inside FT230XQ-R is its 2048-byte EEPROM.

The integrated memory can store USB configuration information and device-related settings, reducing the need for a separate external configuration memory.

This matters on compact PCBs.

An external EEPROM would require additional board space, power connections and assembly work. With the required configuration capability already integrated into FT230XQ-R, the USB interface can be built with fewer supporting components.

For manufacturers producing customized USB serial products, the configurable memory also provides additional flexibility in how the device identifies itself to the host system.

512-Byte Transmit and Receive Buffers

FT230XQ-R incorporates 512-byte transmit and 512-byte receive buffers.

These buffers are important because USB and UART operate differently.

USB transfers data in packets, while UART sends a continuous serial stream according to its configured baud rate.

The internal buffers provide temporary storage between the two interfaces.

This allows the USB and UART sides to operate without requiring the connected MCU to constantly manage every small data transfer.

For embedded applications that generate short bursts of serial data, the buffering can be especially useful.

Integrated Clock Generation Reduces External Components

FT230XQ-R also includes its own clock-generation circuitry.

The device does not require an external crystal for normal operation, helping reduce the number of components around the USB interface.

This has a direct PCB advantage.

There is no need to reserve additional board space for a separate crystal and its associated connections, which helps keep the USB interface compact.

For small development boards, portable devices and densely populated industrial controllers, reducing the external component count can simplify both layout and assembly.

Configurable CBUS Functions

Another distinctive feature of FT230XQ-R is its configurable CBUS interface.

The CBUS pins can be assigned different functions through device configuration, giving designers additional options without adding another control IC.

Depending on the configuration, these pins can provide useful interface and status functions.

This flexibility is valuable when the same basic USB-UART hardware needs to be adapted for different products.

Instead of creating several PCB variants for minor interface differences, some functions can be configured at the device level.

VCP Support Simplifies Computer Connectivity

FT230XQ-R can operate with FTDI's Virtual COM Port driver approach.

For the host computer, this can make the USB-connected device appear as a serial COM port.

That is particularly convenient for embedded equipment because many existing tools already communicate through conventional serial ports.

A technician can connect a USB cable and use a serial terminal or application without the embedded product needing to expose a traditional RS-232 connector.

This is one of the practical reasons USB-to-UART bridge devices remain useful in industrial and development equipment.

D2XX Provides Another Software Interface

For applications that need more direct interaction with the FTDI hardware, FT230XQ-R also supports the D2XX driver architecture.

This provides an alternative to treating the device simply as a standard virtual COM port.

The choice between a virtual COM port and direct driver access depends on the host software and how the product is intended to communicate.

This software flexibility expands the range of systems in which FT230XQ-R can be integrated.

Compact 16-Pin QFN Package

FT230XQ-R is supplied in a 16-pin QFN package measuring approximately 4 mm × 4 mm.

The compact package is an important part of the product's positioning.

USB connectivity normally requires several supporting functions around the interface. Integrating those functions into a small QFN device allows the complete USB-UART section to occupy relatively little PCB area.

The package is particularly attractive when board size is important.

At the same time, QFN assembly requires an appropriate PCB land pattern and controlled soldering process, especially for high-volume manufacturing.

USB Battery Charger Detection

FT230XQ-R also includes USB Battery Charger Detection functionality.

This gives the device additional relevance in products where the USB connector is not used exclusively as a data interface.

For designs involving USB-connected equipment, understanding whether the port is intended for communication, charging or both is important during system architecture.

The charger-detection capability gives designers another useful function within the same USB interface device.

Integrated 3.3V and 1.8V Regulation

FT230XQ-R integrates power-management functions that support its USB and logic interface requirements.

Its internal 3.3V LDO can simplify the surrounding power circuitry in appropriate designs.

This contributes to the device's overall integration.

Instead of building a USB serial interface from a converter, external clock source, configuration memory and additional regulation circuitry, many of these functions are already contained within the FT230XQ-R solution.

The final power arrangement should still follow the required operating configuration and PCB design recommendations.

FT230XQ-R for Existing UART Products

FT230XQ-R is particularly useful when USB needs to be added to an existing UART-based product.

Imagine an industrial controller that already has a reliable MCU and firmware architecture.

The controller communicates internally through UART, but the manufacturer wants users to connect the equipment to a laptop through USB.

Replacing the MCU with a USB-enabled processor could create unnecessary hardware and software changes.

FT230XQ-R provides another route.

The original UART architecture can remain largely intact while the new USB interface is implemented as a separate communication layer.

FT230XQ-R for Development Boards

Development hardware is another strong application.

A microcontroller development board can expose its UART through FT230XQ-R, allowing engineers to communicate with the board using a standard USB cable.

This can be used for firmware diagnostics, command-line interfaces, configuration and serial monitoring.

Because the USB conversion is handled separately, the MCU can dedicate its resources to the application rather than implementing the complete USB communication function.

This makes the architecture easy to understand and convenient during product development.

FT230XQ-R for Industrial Service Interfaces

Industrial equipment often needs a service interface even when USB is not part of the machine's primary control system.

A service engineer may need to connect a computer to read diagnostic information, change settings or communicate with an internal controller.

FT230XQ-R can provide the USB connection while the equipment continues to use its established UART communication architecture internally.

This makes the chip a good fit for products where USB is primarily a maintenance or configuration interface.

FT230XQ-R Versus a Generic USB UART IC

A generic search for "USB UART IC" can produce a large number of components.

FT230XQ-R stands out through its combination of integrated functions.

The chip offers USB-to-UART conversion, configurable CBUS functions, integrated EEPROM, internal clock generation, substantial transmit and receive buffers and multiple host-driver options.

For a designer, this means fewer external components and less supporting circuitry.

For a procurement team, it also means the exact FT230XQ-R part number should be preserved when it is part of a validated BOM.

FT230XQ-R and FT230XS Are Not Simply Different Part Numbers

FT230XQ-R and FT230XS are closely related members of the same USB-to-UART family, but their package formats are different.

FT230XQ-R uses the compact QFN package, while FT230XS uses a leaded SSOP package.

That distinction matters when a replacement is considered.

Even if two devices provide broadly similar USB-UART functionality, their PCB footprints and assembly requirements may be different.

For an existing board, the package should therefore be treated as part of the component selection rather than as an insignificant suffix.

What Engineers Should Check Before Replacing FT230XQ-R

A replacement for FT230XQ-R should not be selected simply by searching for another USB-to-UART converter.

The engineer should compare the USB interface, UART functionality, supported data rates, package, pin assignment, power requirements, configuration method and host-driver compatibility.

The surrounding PCB should also be reviewed.

A different device may require changes to the USB routing, power circuit, firmware or computer-side software.

For an established product, maintaining compatibility can be more valuable than choosing a theoretically similar component.

FT230XQ-R Product Value

The main advantage of FT230XQ-R is its high level of integration in a compact USB-to-UART solution.

It combines the functions needed to connect a USB host with an embedded UART without forcing the main processor to take over USB protocol management.

Its integrated EEPROM, clock generation, buffering, configurable CBUS pins, charger detection and compact QFN package further reduce the amount of supporting hardware required around the interface.

For embedded products that need a reliable USB serial connection without redesigning the main controller architecture, FT230XQ-R provides a focused and practical solution.
