DP83869HMRGZT for Copper and Fiber Ethernet


DP83869HMRGZT from Texas Instruments is a high-immunity Ethernet PHY designed for systems that need more than a conventional copper Gigabit interface. It supports 10BASE-Te, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T over copper while also supporting 100BASE-FX and 1000BASE-X fiber communication.

The combination of copper and fiber support allows one PHY platform to serve different physical network architectures, making it useful for industrial gateways, media converters, network equipment and embedded systems.

One PHY for Copper and Fiber

DP83869HMRGZT integrates the physical-layer functions needed for both twisted-pair and fiber Ethernet. In copper mode, it supports 10Mbps, 100Mbps and 1000Mbps Ethernet. For optical networking, it supports 100BASE-FX and 1000BASE-X.

The device can also perform media conversion between copper and fiber. A system can therefore use the PHY as part of a copper-to-fiber or fiber-to-copper network connection without requiring separate PHY devices for each media type.

This flexibility is particularly useful when industrial Ethernet networks transition between electrical and optical sections.

RGMII and SGMII Connectivity

On the MAC side, DP83869HMRGZT supports RGMII, SGMII and MII interfaces. This provides compatibility with a wide range of processors, switch devices and networking controllers.

The PHY can also operate as an RGMII-to-SGMII or SGMII-to-RGMII bridge. This makes it possible to connect different Ethernet interface architectures without adding another dedicated conversion device.

Programmable RGMII termination impedance further helps designers optimize signal integrity during board development.

Low Latency for Time-Sensitive Networks

Latency is important in industrial Ethernet systems where control data, synchronization and network scheduling need predictable timing.

DP83869HMRGZT provides low RGMII latency, with total latency specified at up to 384ns for 1000BASE-T and up to 361ns for 100BASE-TX. The device also supports Time Sensitive Networking functions.

IEEE 1588 support with Sync Frame Detect can provide timing information to the MAC and help systems compensate for transmission and reception delays. This makes the PHY suitable for applications involving synchronized industrial communication.

High-Immunity Design

Industrial Ethernet equipment can operate near motors, drives, relays and other sources of electrical interference. DP83869HM is designed with enhanced immunity and ESD protection for demanding environments.

The device exceeds 8kV IEC 61000-4-2 direct-contact ESD protection. It also integrates functions such as fast link drop modes, cable diagnostics and built-in self-test to improve network robustness and simplify troubleshooting.

These features can reduce the effort required to diagnose physical-layer problems during equipment commissioning and maintenance.

Clock and Power Flexibility

DP83869HMRGZT supports selectable synchronized clock outputs of 25MHz and 125MHz. A recovered clock output can also be used for applications such as Synchronous Ethernet.

The PHY supports configurable I/O voltage levels of 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V, allowing integration with processors and controllers using different logic-voltage domains.

Power consumption remains relatively low for a PHY supporting both copper and optical Ethernet, with typical consumption below 150mW for 1000BASE-X and below 500mW for 1000BASE-T operation.

48-VQFN Industrial Package

The DP83869HMRGZT ordering variant uses a 48-pin VQFN package measuring approximately 7mm × 7mm. It is specified for an extended operating temperature range from -40°C to +125°C.

The compact package is useful for embedded networking hardware where board area is limited but the design still needs copper, fiber and Gigabit Ethernet functionality.

Applications

DP83869HMRGZT can be used in industrial Ethernet gateways, fiber media converters, factory automation equipment, network switches, embedded computers and communication infrastructure.

It is also suitable for systems that combine copper and optical Ethernet links, TSN-capable industrial networks, SyncE applications and equipment requiring low-latency Gigabit communication.

With support for multiple Ethernet media, flexible MAC interfaces and extended-temperature operation, DP83869HMRGZT provides a versatile physical-layer solution for demanding industrial networking designs.
