The 1N4007 is one of the most widely recognized general purpose rectifier diodes in electronics. It is commonly used when a circuit needs to convert AC into DC or prevent current from flowing in the wrong direction.
Unlike small signal diodes such as the 1N4148, the 1N4007 is aimed more toward power rectification and low frequency power applications.
Its familiar part number also makes it one of the easiest diodes to identify when working with older equipment or replacing components on an existing PCB.
The main reason engineers choose the 1N4007 is its relatively high reverse voltage capability compared with other members of the 1N400x family.
The device is rated for up to 1000V repetitive peak reverse voltage, while its average forward rectified current is typically rated at 1A.
This gives it considerable voltage headroom for many ordinary power supply applications.
It is important to remember that the 1N4007 is a general purpose rectifier rather than a high speed switching diode.
One of the classic applications for the 1N4007 is an AC to DC rectifier circuit.
Four diodes can be arranged as a bridge rectifier to convert an AC input into pulsating DC. A capacitor can then be added after the rectifier to smooth the resulting voltage.
This basic arrangement appears in many types of low power power supplies and electronic equipment.
The 1N4007 is popular here because the circuit is relatively simple and the diode is widely available.
The diode can also be used to protect a circuit from an incorrectly connected DC supply.
If the supply is connected in the wrong direction, the diode can block or redirect the unwanted current depending on the protection arrangement.
For low cost equipment where simplicity is more important than minimizing voltage loss, a conventional rectifier diode can be a practical solution.
Designers should consider the diode's forward voltage drop because it becomes part of the circuit's power loss.
Typical applications include:
AC to DC rectification
Bridge rectifiers
Power supply circuits
Reverse polarity protection
Battery powered equipment
Relay circuits
General purpose rectification
Industrial control boards
The component is best suited to applications where the switching speed requirements are modest.
These two diode part numbers are sometimes confused because both are inexpensive and widely available.
Their intended applications are different.
The 1N4148 is primarily a fast small signal switching diode.
The 1N4007 is primarily a general purpose rectifier designed to handle substantially more current and much higher reverse voltage.
Using one as a direct replacement for the other can therefore produce poor circuit performance or exceed the device's ratings.
When current flows through a 1N4007, there is a forward voltage drop across the diode.
That voltage becomes power dissipation:
Power loss = forward voltage × current
As current increases, the diode can become noticeably warm.
For applications approaching the device's current limits, PCB copper area, ambient temperature and thermal conditions should be considered rather than assuming that the nominal 1A rating applies under every possible condition.
A replacement should provide suitable reverse voltage and forward current capability.
If the diode is being used in a rectifier circuit, engineers should also consider surge current. A bridge rectifier connected to a large smoothing capacitor can experience a significant current surge when power is first applied.
The replacement package and lead arrangement should also match the existing PCB.
The generic 1N4007 part number is widely produced, so many manufacturers and package variations can be found during sourcing.
For a production BOM, the complete manufacturer part number should be specified rather than relying only on the generic device name.
When purchasing, confirm the manufacturer, package, electrical ratings, product status and quantity.
For straightforward AC to DC rectification and general purpose power protection, 1N4007 remains a practical and widely recognized diode choice.
