Finding a PCBA manufacturer in China is not difficult. Finding one that is suitable for a particular project is a different matter.

There are many companies offering PCB assembly in China, from small engineering-focused factories to larger electronics manufacturing service providers. Their capabilities, order quantities, assembly processes and level of engineering support can be quite different.

For a buyer, the better approach is to start with the requirements of the board and then look for manufacturers that can actually handle them.

Start With the Type of PCBA You Need

Before contacting manufacturers, define the project.

A simple two-layer control board does not need the same manufacturing capability as a high-density board with BGA components.

Consider whether you need:

Ask About Component Sourcing

Component sourcing can become a major part of a PCBA project.

A manufacturer may assemble the board well but still have difficulty obtaining one or two critical components.

For turnkey PCBA, suppliers can handle PCB fabrication, component purchasing and assembly as one process. Some manufacturers also review the BOM before quoting to identify missing or difficult-to-source parts.

When requesting a quotation, provide the actual manufacturer part numbers whenever possible.

This gives the supplier a much better basis for checking availability and pricing.

Prototype or Mass Production?

Tell the manufacturer what stage the project is in.

A prototype order may only require a few boards. The next order could be 100, 1,000 or 10,000 units.

Not every factory has the same approach to low-volume production.

Some manufacturers specifically support prototype and low-volume builds before moving customers into larger production. Others are more focused on established volume orders.

If you expect the product to enter mass production later, it is worth asking about production capacity at the beginning.

Quality and Testing

A supplier's equipment list does not tell the whole story.

Ask how the finished PCBAs are inspected and tested.

Depending on the board, this may include AOI, SPI, X-ray, ICT or functional testing. The appropriate combination depends on the design.

For example, X-ray can be useful for inspecting hidden solder joints such as those under BGA packages, while functional testing checks whether the assembled board actually performs as expected.

You should also ask what quality standard the manufacturer follows and whether inspection records can be provided.

Get a Quote With the Right Information

A vague request such as “I need 500 PCB assemblies” is unlikely to produce a useful quotation.

A manufacturer will normally need information such as:

Gerber files
BOM
Pick-and-place file
Assembly drawings
PCB quantity
Component requirements
Testing requirements

Some Chinese PCBA manufacturers explicitly request Gerber files, BOM information, quantities and testing requirements before reviewing a project.

The more complete the information, the easier it is to compare quotations from different suppliers.

Don't Compare Price Alone

Two PCBA quotations can look very different even when the unit prices appear similar.

One supplier may include component sourcing, PCB fabrication, inspection and testing. Another may quote assembly only.

Shipping, tooling, stencil costs, component shortages and testing can also change the final cost.

It is better to compare the complete manufacturing scope rather than selecting the supplier with the lowest assembly price.

Finding a PCBA Manufacturer in China

A good starting point is to shortlist several manufacturers and send the same project information to each one.

Compare their:

• Assembly capabilities

• Production capacity
