AI data centers have very different power requirements from traditional server facilities. High-performance GPUs consume large amounts of electricity, and the power demand of a single rack can be much higher than that of a conventional server rack.
Because of this, the power system has become an important part of AI infrastructure. It is not just a matter of installing a larger power supply. The complete system includes power conversion, distribution, protection and voltage regulation.
Different components perform different jobs along the power path.
The first major stage is the AC-DC power supply.
Electricity from the facility is supplied as AC power, while most electronic circuits inside servers require DC power. The AC-DC stage converts the incoming power into the required DC voltage.
AI data centers place particular demands on these power supplies because they need to handle high output power while maintaining good efficiency.
At high power levels, even a small percentage of energy lost during conversion becomes a significant amount of heat. This is why efficiency and thermal performance are important when selecting power supplies for AI infrastructure.
The voltage required by a GPU or CPU is much lower than the voltage used for higher-level power distribution.
DC-DC converters are therefore used to step the voltage down to the appropriate level.
In high-density AI servers, the conversion stages may be placed close to the processor or GPU to reduce the distance that very high current has to travel.
The converter needs to respond quickly when the processor load changes. This makes transient response, efficiency and thermal performance important specifications.
Transformers are widely used in power conversion systems that require isolation or voltage transformation.
In switching power supplies, the transformer is usually designed for a specific switching frequency and power level. Its core material, winding structure, insulation and thermal characteristics all affect the performance of the converter.
AI server power supplies can require compact transformers capable of handling substantial power without excessive losses.
As power density increases, transformer design becomes more challenging because there is less physical space available for cooling.
Inductors are another important magnetic component in AI data center power systems.
They are commonly used in DC-DC converters and other switching circuits to store energy and control current.
High-power AI systems can require inductors capable of handling high current without excessive temperature rise or magnetic saturation.
The important specifications can include inductance, saturation current, DC resistance and rated temperature.
A poorly selected inductor can increase losses and reduce the efficiency of the entire power converter.
Power systems also need to deal with electromagnetic interference.
Common mode chokes are used to suppress common mode noise on power lines.
This is important in AI data centers because there can be a large number of switching power supplies and high-speed electronic systems operating close together.
A suitable common mode choke can help control conducted EMI without significantly affecting the normal power flow.
The selection depends on the operating current, frequency range, impedance characteristics and required attenuation.
Capacitors are used throughout power conversion systems.
They can provide filtering, energy storage and voltage stabilization.
Input and output capacitors are particularly important in switching power supplies because the voltage and current can change rapidly.
For high-power AI systems, capacitors need to handle the expected ripple current and operating temperature.
Temperature is especially important for electrolytic capacitors because excessive heat can significantly shorten their service life.
Power semiconductors control and switch electrical energy inside modern power supplies.
MOSFETs, IGBTs and newer wide-bandgap devices such as GaN and SiC can be used depending on the application.
The choice depends on switching frequency, voltage, current, efficiency and thermal requirements.
GaN devices are attractive for some high-frequency power applications because they can support high switching speeds and help reduce the size of certain magnetic components.
SiC is particularly relevant to high-voltage and high-power applications where its electrical and thermal characteristics can provide advantages.
The semiconductor itself is only one part of the design. The gate driver, magnetic components, cooling and control system also affect the final performance.
Once power has been converted, it still needs to reach the servers and other equipment.
Busbars and high-current connectors become increasingly important as rack power increases.
Traditional cables can become difficult to manage when current levels become very high. Depending on the architecture, busbars can provide a compact method of distributing high levels of DC power.
Connectors also need to handle the required current without excessive contact resistance or temperature rise.
Mechanical reliability is important because a connection that looks electrically adequate during initial testing may experience problems after long-term operation at high current.
A high-power data center power system needs protection against abnormal electrical conditions.
Protection components can include fuses, circuit breakers, surge protection devices and other overcurrent or overvoltage protection circuits.
Their purpose is to prevent a fault in one part of the system from causing extensive damage elsewhere.
The protection strategy depends on the architecture and power level of the data center.
Transformers and inductors may appear relatively small compared with the server itself, but they have a major influence on power supply performance.
When AI server power increases, magnetic components need to handle more energy while remaining compact and efficient.
Core loss, copper loss, winding temperature and saturation all need to be considered.
This is especially challenging when switching frequencies are increased to reduce the size of the power converter.
The magnetic design therefore becomes an important part of achieving high power density.
AI data centers are not simply using more components. They are also demanding more power from a limited amount of physical space.
This affects nearly every component in the power system.
Power supplies need higher power density. Inductors and transformers need to handle higher current without excessive losses. Connectors need to support higher current in compact packages. Capacitors and power semiconductors need to operate reliably under higher thermal stress.
The result is a shift toward components that provide better electrical performance without requiring a proportional increase in size.
Power conversion always produces some heat.
As AI racks become more powerful, the amount of heat generated by power components becomes harder to ignore.
A power supply may have excellent electrical efficiency but still require careful thermal design when operating at several kilowatts.
Air cooling can be suitable for some systems, while higher-density AI infrastructure may require more advanced cooling methods.
The thermal environment should therefore be considered when selecting transformers, inductors, capacitors, power semiconductors and power supplies.
For an AI data center project, component selection should start with the actual operating conditions.
The important factors will vary depending on the component, but power rating, current capacity, efficiency, operating temperature, reliability and physical size are common considerations.
For magnetic components, engineers may also need to examine core material, saturation characteristics and winding design.
For power supplies and converters, transient response, protection functions and monitoring capabilities can be important.
Long-term availability is another consideration for production systems. A component that performs well during development is less useful if it becomes difficult to source later.
An AI data center depends on many power components working together.
The AC-DC power supply handles the initial conversion. Transformers and inductors support switching conversion. DC-DC converters provide the required voltages. Capacitors help with filtering and energy storage, while power semiconductors control the switching process.
Connectors and busbars distribute the power, and protection components help isolate faults.
As AI computing continues to increase rack power and power density, each of these components faces higher performance requirements. For manufacturers and suppliers, this creates demand for power components that are not only capable of handling higher power, but can also maintain efficiency and reliability in a dense data center environment.
