How to Choose Power Supplies for AI Servers?

AI servers place much higher demands on power systems than many conventional servers. GPUs, AI accelerators, high-performance CPUs and memory modules can create substantial and rapidly changing power loads.

The power supply therefore needs to provide stable power while maintaining high efficiency and reliable operation. For AI servers, power density, thermal management and redundancy can be just as important as the rated output power.

Determine the Required Power

Start with the total power consumption of the server.

The calculation should include GPUs or AI accelerators, CPUs, memory, storage, networking components, cooling fans and other internal devices.

Do not select a power supply based only on the average power consumption. Consider the maximum expected load and short-term power changes.

A suitable power margin can help prevent the power supply from operating continuously at its limit.

Check Output Voltage

The power supply must provide the voltage levels required by the server's power architecture.

AI servers may use multiple power conversion stages. The main power supply can provide a high DC bus voltage, while downstream DC-DC converters generate the lower voltages required by processors, memory and other circuits.

The output voltage range, regulation accuracy and transient response should therefore match the server design.

Consider Power Density

Space inside AI servers is limited, while computing power continues to increase.

A power supply with higher power density can deliver more power without requiring a proportionally larger enclosure.

Higher power density also makes thermal design more challenging, so compact size should be evaluated together with efficiency and cooling requirements.

Look for High Efficiency

Efficiency is particularly important in AI server power supplies because the equipment may operate continuously at high load.

Lower efficiency means more electrical energy is converted into heat.

For example, a small difference in efficiency can result in significant additional heat when the power supply handles hundreds or thousands of watts continuously.

Higher efficiency can reduce both energy consumption and cooling requirements.

Check Thermal Performance

Heat management is one of the key challenges in AI server power systems.

Power supplies generate heat through switching devices, magnetic components, capacitors and other circuit elements.

The power supply should be evaluated at realistic load levels and ambient temperatures.

Cooling methods may include forced airflow, heat sinks or other thermal management structures depending on the design.

Consider Load Transients

AI workloads can cause rapid changes in processor and accelerator power consumption.

The power supply must respond quickly to these changes while maintaining stable output voltage.

Transient response is therefore an important specification when selecting a power supply for an AI server.

A power supply that performs well under a steady load may not necessarily respond adequately to rapid load changes.

Check Redundancy

Reliability is critical in data centers.

AI servers may use redundant power supplies so that the system can continue operating if one power supply fails.

Common configurations allow multiple power supply units to share the server load while providing additional capacity for fault conditions.

The required redundancy depends on the server architecture and data center reliability requirements.

Consider Hot-Swap Requirements

Many data center servers use hot-swappable power supplies.

This allows a failed power supply to be replaced without shutting down the server when the system architecture supports continued operation.

If hot-swap capability is required, check the mechanical design, connectors, power-sharing behavior and management interface of the power supply.

Check Power Factor

For AC-input systems, power factor can affect the efficiency of the overall electrical infrastructure.

A suitable server power supply should provide appropriate power factor performance under its expected load range.

This becomes increasingly important when large numbers of high-power AI servers are installed in the same data center.

Consider EMI Performance

High-frequency switching is necessary for compact and efficient power conversion, but it can also create electromagnetic noise.

The power supply should have suitable EMI filtering and a carefully designed PCB and magnetic system.

Transformers, inductors and common mode chokes can all affect the EMI performance of the power supply.

The final design should be tested as a complete system rather than evaluating individual components separately.

Pay Attention to Magnetic Components

Magnetic components are important in high-power AI server power supplies.

Transformers can be used for isolated power conversion, while inductors handle energy storage and current filtering. PFC inductors and common mode chokes can also be used in the input stage.

These components affect efficiency, temperature rise, power density and EMI performance.

For high-frequency and high-current designs, core material, winding structure, conductor size and thermal performance should be carefully considered.

Check Protection Functions

An AI server power supply should provide appropriate protection against abnormal operating conditions.

Depending on the design, protection may include:

Overvoltage protection

Overcurrent protection

Short-circuit protection

Overtemperature protection

Input protection

The protection functions should be compatible with the server's power management system.

Consider Reliability

AI servers often operate continuously in data centers, so power supply reliability is extremely important.

Look at the manufacturer's component selection, thermal design, production controls and testing procedures.

Long-term reliability is not determined by a single specification. It depends on the complete electrical, thermal and mechanical design.

Check Operating Temperature

The power supply should be suitable for the actual server and data center environment.

Internal temperatures can be considerably higher than the surrounding room temperature because multiple high-power components are operating inside a compact chassis.

Check the rated operating temperature and derating characteristics rather than assuming that the nominal power rating applies under every condition.

Consider Digital Monitoring

Modern server power supplies may provide monitoring and management functions.

Depending on the system, the server or data center management platform may need information such as input power, output voltage, output current, temperature and fault status.

Digital monitoring can make it easier to identify abnormal operating conditions and manage power consumption.

Check Certifications and Compliance

The required certifications depend on the server design and target market.

Before selecting a power supply, verify the applicable safety, EMC and energy-efficiency requirements.

The certification documentation should correspond to the actual power supply model being considered.

Consider Custom Power Supplies

Standard server power supplies may not always meet the requirements of specialized AI systems.

Custom designs can be developed around specific power levels, dimensions, output voltages, cooling methods and communication requirements.

A manufacturer with experience in high-power electronics can also optimize magnetic components, switching circuits and thermal structures for the intended application.

Test the Power Supply Under Real Loads

Prototype testing should include more than a simple constant-load test.

Evaluate the power supply under different load levels and rapid load changes.

Important measurements can include efficiency, output regulation, ripple, temperature rise, transient response and protection behavior.

For AI servers, testing with representative accelerator and processor workloads can provide a more realistic indication of performance.

Choosing an AI Server Power Supply Manufacturer

When comparing power supply manufacturers, look at their experience with high-power computing, data center equipment and high-density power conversion.

Check production capacity, testing capabilities, thermal design experience and magnetic component expertise.

For customized AI server power supplies, engineering support is especially important because the power supply needs to work with the server's complete power architecture.

Choosing the Right Power Supply for AI Servers

The right AI server power supply needs to balance power capacity, efficiency, power density, thermal performance and reliability.

Output voltage, transient response, redundancy, protection, EMI performance and monitoring functions should also be considered.

As AI servers continue to demand more computing power, the power supply becomes an increasingly important part of the overall system design. A well-designed power supply can help maintain stable operation while reducing energy losses and thermal load in the data center.
